Саккара... In the last few days Sakkara has been ransacked. Maia is destroyed and even the reliefs in the burial chamber have been hacked out. There is mass digging around the Unas area in particular. The inspector could not get as far as the Teti area as he was threatened with guns but the mastabas will have suffered the same fate.

Also Dutch excavation projects in Egypt are destroyed and looted, said Maarten Raven, Egyptologist at the Museum of Antiquities in Leiden.
These excavations are in Saqqara, just outside Cairo. It is a project of the museum since 1975. Raven says that according to unofficial reports the looting goes on day and night. There is no monitoring, but total anarchy. Pyramids and enclosed private tombs have been broken, warehouses and depots are being plundered.

At Saqqara, a vast complex of pyramids and pharaonic-era tombs south of Cairo, some 5,000-years-old, looters broke into at least a half-dozen storage facilities and stole or damaged some wall carvings and hieroglyphs that were under excavation, said Ragad Turkey, a site supervisor. But thieves were unable to break into the main storage depot, which contains the site's most valuable items and is guarded by steel doors, Mr Turkey said. More than 40 other storage installations also were untouched, he said.

More good news comes from Saqqara, where a committee reported that, although outlaws did open the padlocks of tombs there, they did not enter the tombs or cause any damage; everything is safe.
